Domaine des Berthiers

« The domain’s secret has always been that it is the women who taste the wine before it is bottled ».

Evelyne Dagueneau

Pouilly-Fumé
DOMAINE DES BERTHIERS IN POUILLY-FUME

THE ESTATE

Our History

Jean-Claude Dagueneau, the founder of Domaine des Berthiers, was one of the key figures of the Pouilly Fumé appellation.

His legacy and that of his wines is the world wide recognition of the appellation and his unique know-how has been passed down to Damien, the current winemaker of the estate.

Evelyne, the wife of Jean-Claude Dagueneau, still resides at the Estate which is the personification of the memory of her husband. We dedicate our “Cuvée d‘Eve” to her.

The estate’s vineyards benefit from flintstone terroir which can only be found on the higher lying vineyards of the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, around the Butte de St- Andelain. (The St-Andelain hill)

The Silex or Flintstone experience

The Silex terroir of Pouilly Fumé dates from the Upper Cretaceous period around 100 million years to 66 million years ago. Flint is part of the silica family (like sand) and the oxides it contains will influence its colour, resulting in hues of grey, pink and black in our vineyards.

Within the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, this terroir is widely acknowledged and it has the particularity of storing and then reflecting the heat.

This terroir results in chiseled wines, endowed with great minerality and acclaimed for their flinty aromas.

This soil is a great part of the evolution of our vines and we cherish the fact to have such an exceptional terroir, through which we exemplify our two cuvées and the aromatic and olfactory nuances that this soil offers.

A feminine touch

It is the women who adjudicate at Domaine des Berthiers. Our wines will only be bottled on condition that they approve them. No amount of hard work from our winemaker nor the time it took to make our wine nor the vagaries of the weather will influence the decision on when to bottle. They taste it and deliver their verdict.

We create our wines with a unique sensitivity and femininity. As exemplified by Evelyne, whose wines were served at the finest Parisian tables where groups of friends socialised with refinement to gather the latest news of the capital.

OUR WINES

Our Pouilly-Fumé wines are a feminine and refined expression of Sauvignon Blanc …
